LAST LIGHT

Last Light is the second volume in what is fast emerging as a three part series from Australian photographers Malcolm Holdsworth, Robert Kingsford-Smith and their late mate George Bambery.  It follows the format of its immediate predecessor, Late Light

The small band of Cadeco publication loyalists has come to expect a veritable fruit salad of countries and continents from these blokes, and this book is no exception. Subject matter ranges from the New South Wales Government Railways in the late1960s, through Australian private lines in the 70s & 80s, to the wider world in the period from the early 1970s to steam's Waterloo in China in 2005. While the shots may not all be perfect art, many of them show times and subject matter that are now fading to the edges of observers’ memories and some scenes are truly rare.

These books are well crafted, set in a large coffee table format, and the brief story lines are easily digestible.  They are aimed at serious steam travellers of a certain vintage and rely on plenty of assumptions about readers’ knowledge of the topic.  Guest photographers are featured in each of the main contributors’ chapters, this time being Aussie fan Paul Hogan, UK expat Mark Lanham and well-known UK gricer, the late Pete Skelton.

We can see the tunnel at the end of the Cadeco light now, so enjoy the output while it lasts.  When the printing presses stop turning in mid-2025, they will be stationary for a very long time (allegedly!).
